PRODUCE MARKET REPORT EUROPE

August 27, 2010

GENERAL

Many parts of Europe are suffering extreme weather circumstances. Heavy rains are causing flooded fields. This makes it very difficult, or even impossible, to harvest produce. It also has a big impact on the growth of the products. Especially outdoor growing products (lettuce Romain, colored lettuces etc) are getting short.

SALADS

In this period, you might find some more dirt on the outer leaves of our salads. This is simply soil, splashed up due to heavy rains; not to be mixed up with bugs. Please make sure produce is properly washed before consumption.

SPINACH

Due to the above described extreme weather circumstances, availability of spinach fresh is limited and quality is only average. We advise to order minimal quantities and use immediately after delivery on board.

CORN ON THE COB

Summer is ending in the North of Europe. Typical season for corn on the cob. Nice, full grain and fresh harvested sweet corn.

ASPARAGUS

Weather in Peru is still very bad, influenced by the ‘La Niña’ effect. It is said this is the worst weather what is seen in many years. Temperatures are extremely low. This caused an enormous drop in production of green asparagus. Since Peru is the worlds main producer of green asparagus, we face a major shortage on all markets. It seems situation is slightly improving now, but we cannot guarantee quantities yet. You will understand this situation has a major impact on prices.

BABY VEGETABLES

Availability of baby veggies remains a problem. Pattypan is hardly or not available at all. Other types only limited. It is only baby courgettes we receive in reasonable quantities.

SALSIFY

Season for salsify is over. All old crop stock has ended. New season is expected to start in October.

SHARON FRUIT/KAKI

Season from South Africa is over. Next harvest is expected from Israel, starting end of October.

FIGS

Season for European fresh figs has started. Good volumes are available from Turkey. Very nice product with an excellent taste!

APPLES GOLDEN DELICIOUS

Old crop French Golden Delicious are no longer available. New crop is the early variety with very immature fruit, very greenish and no taste. In order to guarantee satisfying taste and outlook, we will supply Dutch Golden Delicious for the time being. Much better color and taste. This is a temporarily switch; as soon as the eating quality of the new crop French apples is back to our specifications, we will start supplying this product again.

PITAHAYA (DRAGON FRUIT) purple/yellow

Vietnam, the main exporter of Pitahaya, is suffering from extremely  weather with unusual high temperatures. The pitahaya is very much affected by these conditions, resulting in enormous quality problems at arrival in Europe. Export is stopped; only very few quantities arrive by airfreight. In the worst case we will not be able to supply the required quantities.

KUMQUATS

We are just in between 2 different areas of origin for kumquats; South African / Israeli season has ended and South American season is about to start. We might be in a position that we are not able to fulfil orders. This will be solved soon when South American produce comes available.

ORANGES

The supply of oranges  from the Southern Hemisphere to Europe is less than other years. In order to have the required quantities available, it is possible that we are forced to supply larger sizes then specified.
